Insect pheromones are released by female insects to attract males for mating. A pheromone lure may smell like a female insect "in heat" to an insect pest. Many female insects release odors to signal their readiness for mating. These odors, or pheromones, can be reproduced in a laboratory. These materials are then applied to a rubber cap or other device, and the scent is released slowly over several weeks, attracting the insects to the collection device.
